Case Studies

In order to help guide RCCAP consortium members in their adaptation and resilience planning, an initial set of case studies has been developed to demonstrate how climate information can be used for climate risk assessments and adaptation planning within different contexts.

Thailand map markerImpact of Projected Climate Change on Rice Production Systems

This case study demonstrates the use of dynamically downscaled climate model data into a rice model to assess climate change impacts on rice production in eight sites in Thailand. Simulated rice grain yield of several rice varieties for each site during the period 2006–2040 was compared to an historical baseline period (1973–2005).

Philippines map markerApplication of Climate Change Data to Estimate Irrigation Design Water Duty

This case study in demonstrates the use of bias-corrected downscaled climate model data into a paddy water balance model to assess the impact of climate change on irrigation design water duty (a parameter required for designing capacities of irrigation channels). The assessment was conducted for a specific location (Cabanatuan City) in the Philippine province of Nueva Ecija, and compared projections for the period 2036–2065 with an historical baseline period (1971–2000).

Indonesia map markerClimate Projection and Drought Hazard Assessments in East Java Province

This case study demonstrates the use of both statistically and dynamically downscaled climate model data for developing rainfall projections and drought hazard assessment in Indonesia’s East Java province. The drought hazard is represented by the Drought Hazard Index (DHI) based on two indicators: the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Dry Spell. Projections for the period 2011–2040 are compared to an historical baseline period (1981–2010).
