Using this Portal

This portal aims to help you to identify and use climate information appropriate to your adaptation planning needs. To do this, the portal provides:

  • Ready access to regional climate data
  • Guidance on using and/or developing climate information to support vulnerability and impact assessments through guidelines and case studies for South East Asia and the Pacific
  • An online community of practice and forums to discuss issues arising in the use of climate information.
Using Climate Information for Adaptation Planning

There are two broad pathways to using climate information for adaptation and resilience planning:

  1. Initial/rapid assessment – when climate data and information is turned into knowledge products and advice that can inform the initial stages of adaptation planning. This pathway is generally applied when a rapid assessment is required, such as for a workshop or initial planning exercise.
  2. Detailed assessment – when climate data and information is used to undertake detailed impact and vulnerability assessments. This pathway is usually applied when a more detailed information about impacts, risks and vulnerability are required, which is prior to the development of appropriate adaptation options.
Key Considerations

There is a range of existing data, information, knowledge resources and tools that can be used for climate change adaptation and resilience planning. This existing content covers all steps in the adaptation and can be discovered via the data portal and resource library. You can also refer to the case studies or review advice on the community forums.

Be mindful that many other non-climate influences have to be taken into account as well. These considerations can be physical (e.g. land use, topography, asset condition) and non-physical (e.g. legislation, socio-cultural factors, and the economy).


Climate data. Historical climate observations along with direct model outputs covering historical and future periods[1].
Climate product. A derived synthesis of climate data[2].
Climate Information. Climate data, climate products and/or climate knowledge[3].
Climate service. Providing climate information in a way that assists decision making by individuals and organizations[4].
Climate projections. These describe the change to climate that is simulated on the basis of particular given set of input conditions—a given representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenario and the climate model in which it is used[5].
Climate scenarios. These can be based on projections but will often require specific formulation so the impact model can use the climate change information[6].
